ORANGE REVEALS RISE IN MOBILE DATA USE

May 1, 2008

Orange’s Digital Media Index report has revealed a sharp increase in the demand for mobile data alongside traditional fixed-line broadband.

The Index, which reveals usage patterns across the full range of the operator’s entertainment and communications services, showed a 35 per cent increase in mobile internet page impressions with over 1.3 billion text messages sent per month – up 21 per cent.

The findings also found that interest in Mobile TV has taken off, with an 87 per cent increase in the total hours viewed. Interest in video downloads has also gathered speed, having doubled in the last year. Also, a record 289,000 single music tracks were downloaded in December alone.

All the figures quoted are in comparison to Orange’s previous Digital Media Index, which was released in November 2007.

Orange director of portals Matthew Kirk said: “The mobile phone has truly taken its place as a multimedia content device. The popularity of mobile TV, music and gaming has surged as customers use the mobile internet alongside home broadband to stay connected wherever they are.”
